Sex Addiction

Sex Addiction

Sex Addiction is described as an overwhelming need of Sex, the pursuit of which frequently takes precedence over all other things in life, including work & relationships. Sex addicts frequently engage in risky behaviors, including not only unprotected sex, but also seeking stimulation in dangerous situations.

Behavior is usually self-justified, so most Sex addicts don't view that actions as problematic, though they frequently feel a sense of shame or guilt after indulging their addiction.

However, the existence of Sex Addiction is controversial & it was not included in the recently updated diagnostic & statistical manual of mental disorders, which is considered the 'Bible" for diagnosing mental disorders. Many experts prefer the term "Hyper-Sexual Disorder", rather than "Sex Addiction".

Sex Addicts are not simply people who crave lots of Sex. Instead, they have underlying problems - Stress, Anxiety, Depression and Shame- that drives their often risky sexual behavior. If they are suffering, we want to help them.

That problem puts so much at risk, their personal lives, their social lives, their jobs, and with the threat of HIV/AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

Despite the danger, they return to the same behaviors over & over, whether it's internet porn, soliciting sex workers, seeking affairs, masturbating or exposing themselves of other acts like rape.

"I see in them an inability to stop what they are doing. They are pre-occupied; their brain just keeps going back to it. It often leads to loneliness and isolation. There’s such intense pain & shame."

I do see many clients in my clinic and I strongly believe, the numbers are increasing in our country, may be due to more numbers of people watch porn in India, then in other western country, and due to commercialization of Sex by media and internet and lifestyle issues-stress etc. I have not seen or aware about any research or study going on in India. There are no reliable estimates of how many people have the disorder. Some studies suggest that it's more common in men, then women.

Hyper-sexual behavior can appear similar to those associated with obsessive compulsive disorder. It also could be tied to abnormal levels of the brain chemicals Dopa-Mine or Serotonin, or problems related to attention impulse control or emotional regulation could also be involved.

Treatment - One-On-One Counseling, support groups & having a plan are key. Family and partner's support is very helpful. In some cases, medications used to treat obsessive compulsive disorder or impulse control disorders may be used to curb the compulsive nature of the Sex Addiction.
